Traveled back to the Palm Springs area to hike a few peaks west of San Jacinto, Black Mountain #1 and Indian Mountain. Black Mountain Trail steeply meanders for 3 1/2 miles to the Black Mountain Lookout Road near the summit. Instead of following the road, I hiked straight up to the top with it's Fire Lookout. After taking in the views and having a snack, I decided to hike to Castle Rocks instead of Indian Mountain figuring there would be very little snow. I followed the road to Boulder Basin campground, from where I took the dirt road for several miles to where the PCT crosses the road. Once on the PCT, I immediately started running into snow/ice, from just a trace at first, to 1/2 a foot or more after the first mile. Just after I passed the Jan Jacinto Wilderness sign, the trail had disappeared. Checking my GPS, I should be very close to Castle Rocks, but with no ducks to be found and the snow/ice getting very tricky, I decided to call it a day and hike back down. On the way back, I stopped at an overlook with great views of the desert far below, and snow-capped San Gorgonio in the background.
